I guess that it's comes down to what you are used to. My own impression 
of Debian is that if you are familiar with it and prefer to hack the 
setup maually, then it can be good. I have played with it and eventually 
got it set up to do what I wanted, but I found it a lot more work than 
when managing SuSE systems.

 From time to time, I install software that is not included in the SuSE 
discs or in their archives. Most times, RPM stuff installs OK and extra 
libs, etc can usually be found also as RPM. I have also 
compiled/installed stuff from source code, usually without too many 
problems.

For me, the pain of trying to set up and manage Debian, doesn't justify 
any of the claimed gains.
