As wvdial recognises it, why not try to connect with wvdial.
If you are successful, you know the problem lies with kppp,
if not then you are looking for something more fundamental.
Just to check - this is a serial, outboard modem, that
you've had working before on other PCs? & has your BT
line changed to digital?
btw Have you got a link from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS0?
