I can't see that 'flavour' doesn't really explains anything. Again, 'version' 
could simply suggest an earlier or later edition of basically the same thing.
eg Debian v4 or Debian v5.

As I mentioned in a previous message, anyone who is interested enough in using 
computers to the extent that they might consider using Linux will already 
have come across terms like 'Linux' and probably also 'distro'. Why 
complicate the issue?
