Some time back, I had a similar problem when I was modifying a webcam for long 
exposure operation  (ie for astrophotography). I was pretty sure that my 
electronics mods were OK, but there was just a bit of doubt. The problem was 
intermittent, so of course when I took a meter to the cable, Sod's law meant 
that it appeared to be OK.
