Seconded - the ease of Perl, with the sanity of Smalltalk ;)

In that case I'd say only go with Python if you're
really prepared to push yourself in to it. It won't
be a comfortable initial fit, but once in who knows?

Alternatively how about LISP? It's still on my 
[ever-expanding] to-do list. Earning its place my 
being the language reputed to most change your view
of programming.

Alternatively, have you looked at haskell? Playing
with the code for Xmonad is a good starting point,
I guess.
