Another option you could consider is the grandfather of all *nix typesetting 
tools -- troff.  The GNU version of this, known as groff, can be found at 
http://groff.ffii.org

It's also a tag, (or rather mark up), based typesetting system, but doesn't 
have such a steep learning curve as LaTeX.  I use it routinely, with a bit of 
help from GhostScript, to produce technical documentation in PDF format.  
I've dabbled with some alternatives, but keep going back to groff;  (having 
contributed to the groff project, I'm biased, of course :-)  Haven't tried 
setting out flyers or posters with it, though it should be well capable.
