It doesn't matter. DSL is considered an 'always on' service. You can 
disconnect if you like, however, although if you're firewalled or have 
a network running through a router, there's no need to worry. That 
said, downloading gigabytes of data in the first several days of having 
an account might not have been the best thing to do. ;-) Hopefully you 
won't get tagged as being a high usage account.

Yes. Bear in mind that often the sites you're downloading from will be 
overloaded or behind weird configurations that cause them to be slower 
than you might expect. I once had a month on 4Mbps DSL, and it was 
/very/ rare anything would max it out. 40-60KB/sec sounds healthy for 
512kbps.

Are you sure your 'From' address is still the same in your e-mail 
client when going through that SMTP server?
