MPlayer is the nicest media player I've ever used, and I stay away
from the GUI, mainly because I feel it gets in the way of what is a
very good app.
I know of only two problems with mplayer:
1) No DVD menus, and 
2) No playlist capability.

Of course, the former is solved by just playing the tracks one at a
time until you come across the right one, ie:

mplayer dvd://1

and the latter using shell scripts.

Might it be worth drawing up a cheat sheet of MPlayer/MEncoder args
and keyboard controls for the website? :)
