I quite agree.
I once tried installing gentoo on an Epia Nehemiah system. It took about a
day to download and compile a basic system. Of course, the next thing I did
was try to install vim, but unfortunately, I accidentally chose gvim
instead. I left it for the best part of a week before I realised it was
trying to download and compile a whole X install.
My Epia system now has Debian installed. It took one afternoon.
IMHO, Gentoo is probably best reserved for 64 bit chips or unusual
architectures. I definitely wouldn't recommend it as a first linux distro.

Of course, now that I think about it, you don't have to compile everything
you install in gentoo. Maybe I should try breaking out those isos again...
