What wireless card is it? Running "lspci" should tell you. For example
on my Dell it shows this device:-

0000:03:03.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 05)

Which works just fine under Ubuntu (breezy and dapper) here.

Some live CDs are no good at this as they may not have the necessary
firmware and other binary bits and bobs that may be difficult to
redistribute due to licencing issues.
