Systems Administrators
We have an opening for Systems Administrators to join our busy 24/7 support team. The role is a full-time, shift-based permanent position located at our head office
Salary: Dependent upon experience circa £23-30k
Location: Kent, UK.
General Requirements:
This position is a hands on, shift based, technical support role. An excellent telephone manner, good interpersonal, verbal and written skills, and a keen willingness to learn are all essential to this role.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
o To be 1st line of contact with clients on a day-to-day basis
o Respond to client requests within SLA and in a professional manner
o Be responsible for issues raised throughout the problem management process to ensure a satisfactory resolution
o Assist in the build and configurations of PCs, laptops and servers as required
o Assist in the installation of a variety of equipment including hardware, cabling and tray work
o To undertake the testing and support of software
o To ensure that backups are carried out in accordance with procedures including tape changes where appropriate
o To assist other departments as and when required
o Maintain the stock system, so that critical spares holdings are kept within defined levels
o Assist with other tasks as and when required by your line manager
o To adhere to ITIL best practices and ISO27001 processes and procedures
Good verbal and written communication skills: you will be expected to interact with customers from the very start. English fluency is essential.
An enthusiasm for Open Source software and a strong interest in IT security.
The ability to be self-motivated and manage your own time and workload effectively. A willingness to get stuck in, and to help and co-operate with the rest of the team is essential.
Technical Requirements:
Knowledge and significant experience of managing at least two of FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Linux (ideally Gentoo or Red Hat). You will need to understand how to install and configure a server; principles of security and post-install lock-down of servers; user accounts and passwords; configuring network interfaces, IP numbers, networking and basic routing; installing server software packages and enabling them to run at system startup; applying patches and general system maintenance.
Experience of configuring and managing a range of these major application classes, preferably in a commercial context. You should be familiar with applications from several of these program groups, and have a good understanding of the principles involved, even if you have not used all of
the examples listed. Of course, the more you understand, the better:
o Firewalls: ipfw, ipf, pf, IPtables, Cisco ASA
o Web Services: apache-1.3.x, apache-2.x, squid, PHP, apache-tomcat
o Shell Scripting: Bourne shell (/bin/sh), bash, perl (Ability with other programming languages a plus)
o Cryptography: Apache-SSL, SSH, OpenVPN, IPsec, X509
o RDBMS: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MS-SQL
o DNS: BIND, djbdns (experience of dealing with Nominet, RIPE etc. a plus)
o Backup: Bacula, Amanda, Legato Networker, Veritas Netbackup
o E-Mail: sendmail, exim, postfix, qmail, dovecot, cyrus imapd, courier
Monitoring: Nagios, net-snmpd, Big Brother
