Subject: Jobs in Computing for Malaria Research at Oxford University

Hi all,

We are advertising three jobs at the Centre for Genomics and Global
Health, based at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. These
are:

Senior Systems and Database Administrator (Grade 8)
http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5948j.shtml

Senior Web Database Developer (Software Engineer) (Grade 8)
http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5885j.shtml

Web Database Developer (Software Engineer) (Grade 7)
http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5883j.shtml

Closing date for applications is 14 May 2010 (sorry for the short
notice).

To provide a bit of context, we are a large-ish scientific research
group focused mainly on assisting the global campaign to eliminate
malaria.

Much of our work involves setting up and supporting large-scale
data-sharing networks, such as MalariaGEN (www.malariagen.net), which
are global collaborations of researchers pooling data collected from
malaria endemic areas, particularly Africa and SE Asia.

A lot of what we do is relatively new or cutting edge from a
scientific point of view, so we have a creative and enthusiastic
informatics team within CGGH developing and hosting bespoke software
to support the science.

Because much of the research involves global collaboration, we
specialise in Web-based technology. Members of our informatics team
have made significant contributions to open-source projects like
MediaWiki, and others who have been involved in development of Web
standards for W3C, so we've got some great experience within the team,
as well as some talented engineers. We're interested in technology but
we're also passionate about making a difference in our field of
research.

We're looking for a Senior Systems and Database Administrator to take
on management of our computing and software infrastructure in
Oxford. This is a very diverse role, spanning server setup and
management (both on-site and in the cloud), operating systems work
(mostly Linux), database design and administration, application and
web server configuration, as well as deploying and managing the
bespoke Web-based software applications we build in-house. The role
will also involve planning and coordinating new infrastructure and
deployment projects, and consulting on strategy.

If you enjoy responsibility and like hands-on work as much as
organising and coordinating large, complicated and high-profile pieces
of work, please do consider applying for the Senior Systems and
Database Administrator post:

http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5948j.shtml

We're also looking for talented and creative computer scientists /
software engineers who have significant experience in Web technology
(the official job title is "Web Database Developer" but "Web
Application Developer" would also be accurate). Most of our new work
is currently either Java GWT with Hibernate and MySQL, or XForms with
Java, REST web services and XQuery. We also maintain some older CGI
applications written in Perl, so an open mind and an ability to switch
between languages is a must.

We have two Web Database Developer posts available:

http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5885j.shtml (Grade 8)
http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/ps/oao/ar/ar5883j.shtml (Grade 7)

The grade 8 position requires significant experience in Java and Web
technology and involves greater responsibility within our current
projects. The grade 7 position requires some experience in Java and
Web technology, but enthusiasm and ability will also count for a
lot. In both cases specifically relevant experience is good, but we
can also provide training.

If you want to put your software engineering talents to work on some
hard problems for a worthy cause, please do consider applying for one
of these posts.

Thanks,

Alistair
