I'm posting this on behalf of a client where we've helped them develop a system that now needs a permanent person to come in and manage the infrastructure.

They have left start-up mode, have firm funding in place and a healthy order book. They are now looking to get everything formalised; systems being a key part of this. 

It's pretty cool technology and an excellent opportunity to get 'Smart' on your CV a year or so before DECC officially start the rollout.

BACKGROUND:

Guru Systems is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our growing team as Systems and Database Administrator. The role involves setting up and looking after our server-based systems and databases, which are essential for all the services we provide.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

--Systems Administration 

Overall responsibility for maintaining security & reliability on servers including patches and updates

Multi-VPN setup and administration

Disaster recovery strategy and testing

System monitoring & alerts

Systems setup & scaling

Scheduling of backup routines

Penetration testing

General Linux systems administration

Troubleshooting

--Database Administration 

MySQL administration

Writing and running stored procedures

Creating and running reports

Benchmarking queries, indexing and optimising performance

Data warehousing strategy

Development support using PHP and / or Python

Managing the integration of Guru server-based systems with third parties, including liaising with client engineers

Implementing and documenting the public API for integration with third party systems
 
KEY REQUIREMENTS: 

3+ years proven experience of running a multi-user, multi-server publically accessible Linux environment

Excellent relational database design & maintenance skills

Strong SQL (queries, stored procedures)

Ability to tune MySQL for handling large datasets and high throughput

Standard network & TCP/IP configuration (routing, iptables, DNS)

Apache / PHP configuration and securing

Bash / Python scripting

Debian
 
DESIRABLE SKILLS: 

Strong PHP or Python web development

Cisco Firewalls

Zigbee mesh networking (set-up, routing)

SALARY:

£40,000 per annum dependant on skills and experience
