perhaps it's one of these new-age application processes that weeds out
those deemed less competent?

Like the one that I saw a while back where you could only apply for an
entirely linux-based security-related (IIRC) role via a document that could
only be viewed in windows. The secret was some hidden code in the page that
you downloaded the document from which eventually pointed you to the
"proper" registration location (after a series of tests I guess, I wasn't
that interested TBH - I'm not a security guru.) Apparently they
auto-rejected anyone who filled out the form in the windows-only document
because the applicant wasn't worthy. An underhanded version of the recent
overt GCHQ recruitment campaigns?
