Linux Support Technician - Birmingham

We currently have a vacancy for a Linux Support Technician based in our Birmingham office. The role will include some travel and possibly overnight stays and you will be required to provide, on a rota basis, support outside of normal working hours.
The role involves working in the Hosting team to ensure that IT Services achieve high levels of availability and reliability. You will effectively monitor, fix and support all server hardware, Linux, Centos 5, Centos 6 and Microsoft server software platforms as well as applications that reside in the Hosted environment and customer locations and will diagnose and resolve problems as they arise.
You will be responsible for supporting systems and associated tools which facilitate continuous proactive monitoring of customer systems and you will also aid the delivery of software into production, including developing and improving scripts, defining installation documentation, setting up adhoc test systems and testing on behalf of customers. The systems include (but are not limited to) continuous integration, automated build/test, glassfish, php, java, data centre automation and perl scripting.
The role will involve carrying out the following:
. Monitoring, fixing and supporting the environment and ensuring that the central Hosting backup system operates optimally and monitoring daily backups and report exceptions and escalating if a backup has failed
. Checking that the backup service works within Hosting and all associated linked locations
. Providing a build and upgrade service for all Data Centre hardware and software
. Ensuring that all assigned servers are equipped with the latest levels of software patches
. Testing and implementing any planned changes to the assigned server / storage infrastructure in any specified location
. Assisting with the maintenance and control of virtual environments which are based around VMware ESX
. Effectively managing the calls to SLA constraints
. Maintaining Apache and Tomcat
. Providing technical consultancy independently or as part of a project in conjunction with colleagues from other teams
. Communicating with customers to arrange downtime and working out of hours to ensure work is completed as expected
. Being conversant with the new VMware ESX infrastructure and its use and deployment and being able to administer the new Commvault backup system
. Ensuring group IT policies and procedures are communicated and adhered to by all IT staff
. Ensuring that assigned servers are kept up to date in terms of patches and service packs with particular emphasis on security fixes
. Operating a remote support and monitoring service that can be utilised to control all specified servers
. Providing installation and implementation services for Microsoft based systems
. Ensuring that the level of Anti-virus software on the servers is kept up to date and that it is available in optimum form to protect against virus attacks
. Ensuring that the necessary tools and software are in place to aid in the recovery of servers that have failed and ensuring that daily disaster recovery backups are taken and moved off-site as early as is practically possible
. Ensuring that changes are planned and tested in advance prior to implementation
. Establish working relationships with customers, always striving to improve the customer rapport with the IT department
. Working in accordance with Tribal's quality processes and procedures (QMS) i.e. ISO9001 and ISO27001
. Maintaining an accurate inventory of all software and hardware in assigned locations to ensure that maintenance contracts can be renewed as and when applicable
Skills, knowledge and experience required:
. Detailed knowledge of VMware and Vsphere 4 operating systems and the ability to utilise and control DRS and other significant features
. Ideally substantial relevant Linux systems experience and excellent Linux administration skills
. Ideally substantial relevant Microsoft systems and VMWare ESX experience
. Ideally advanced PHP and Perl scripting ability
. A good understanding of databases technologies such as Microsoft SQL, Tomcat and Apache
. Working knowledge of Nagios and Opsview and the ability to ensure that alerts are responded to in priority order
. Detailed knowledge of Help Desk processes and fully conversant with delivering a robust incident management service
. Experienced in the Network topologies including firewall, switches, load balancers an ids modules
. Determination and dedication to meet objectives and get the job done and the ability to work to tight deadlines whilst still preserving excellence
. Pro-active, flexible and adaptable approach and logical thinking, planning and problem solving skills
. Ability to work effectively under pressure whilst always presenting a highly professional image both internally and externally
. Customer focused with demonstrable 'soft skills' and empathy with users issues
. Ability to work effectively on a number of issues at one time and manage constantly changing priorities and commitments
. Ability to plan and manage own time effectively and make decisions on a day to day basis with minimal supervision whilst also being a team player
. A self-starter who displays initiative, drive and enthusiasm
. Good communication skills, both verbal and written, in order that documentation provided meets the required standard
