Various reasons including inability to have in-person team meetings, 
inability to get promoted to head up a team that required physical 
presence, time differences (could be very significant), currency 
conversion rates, lag on video calls reducing communication, etc. etc.

And yes someone could potentially expect a salary cut if they move away.
