Sirius was founded in 1998 (the year of the great renaming!) and from humble beginnings has grown to serve household name clients in Government, Private Sector, and Education around the world, with our main focus in America and the UK. You can read more here if you haven’t heard of us before (https://www.siriusopensource.com). We even provide Open Source services and support to the IETF, we’re that dedicated to excellence in what we do.

The latest vacancy in our UK business is for a Senior Open Source Engineer. You’ll be based in the UK, but will work with Sirius clients around the World.

Here’s the Job Description:

Job Summary:

You are looking for the opportunity to change the world through Open Source, and want to find the right company to call 'home’ to do that from! Come and join Sirius, on a mission to drive Linux and Open Source into the heart of Businesses, Governments, and Organizations everywhere.
You will rapidly become a key player in the company, working with other passionate and dedicated individuals, associates, F/L/OSS core teams, and other Open Source partners to really show what the skills you have developed over the years can do, and to unleash the power of Open Source everywhere you go, and on every system you touch.

Essential Functions:

* Applicants will have an outstanding track record of applying contemporary knowledge of prevalent Open Source technologies to build business systems that turn customers into raving fans! From design through to production deployment, you can explain how you did it, including solving support and maintenance issues.

* The chosen applicant will become a Lead Engineer in Deployment and System Integration Projects*, working harmoniously with teammate Engineers and specialist Associates. You will deliver to SOW, passing UAT and meeting AC. (* Including Linux, PostgreSQL, OpenLDAP, Shibboleth, Webstack (LAMP/NGINX/Drupal/etc.), Mailman, Moodle, Squid, Samba, AWS, Terraform, Ansible and Jenkins).

* Candidates must also be willing to serve as Support escalation points for our Helpdesk Operators. Operating as 2nd (and, where possible, 3rd) line Support to resolve issues, closing tickets within SLA and with customer’s delighted approval. Will require occasional on-call availability.

* Candidates will be adept Consultants, able to deliver sound and accurate advice that empowers customers to successfully introduce, or expand the use of, Open Source software into their proprietary, open, or hybrid technology environments.

* Successful applicants will periodically work with our Sales Executives as Technical Presales experts. Presales include credible and authoritative supporting discussions with prospective customers, and measurably concise and intelligible technical copy for Proposals.

* You will also help Sirius with our own infrastructure - designing, implementing, maintaining and administering the software stack the company runs on. Sirius must remain an outstanding example, and benchmark, of running a successful business on Free and Open Source Software.

* Candidates will need great communication skills, verbal (including phone manner) and written, measured by your ability to collect, diagnose, and convey information precisely and concisely to both technical and non-technical customers and colleagues.

* Applicants must be willing to follow all Company Policies, and standard, documented, processes and procedures. Following ‘knowledge-base’ instructions to perform regular and scheduled tasks (e.g. DevOps, configuration management, deployment and maintenance) is part of the ‘Sirius Way’. If you are really good, you can help us write them!

* Knowledge and experience with Policy, Process and Procedures in a Corporate environment, including relevant industry best practice standards such as ITIL, ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and GDPR, is an advantage.

* The chosen applicant will adroitly collaborate with other Engineers, Developers, DevOps, Helpdesk and Support Team, Management, and, of course, Customers. You will rapidly establish gung-ho relationships with your colleagues and Sirius associates, working together to turn customers into raving fans!

* Sirius is proud of its coaching, mentoring and training culture, and the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a history of doing the same.

* Technical writing skills are a definite plus - writing documentation and keeping legacy documentation relevant and up to date.

Out of hours / on call expectations: We provide service 24/7/365 out of the USA and UK (for EMEA), and successful applicants will need to be willing to do occasional our-of-hours and escalation duties.
