We use both at work. XUbuntu on boxes we give to
socially-excluded families, who seem remarkably
happy with the software. Puppy to turn thin clients
with a bit of flash ROM into fast demonstration
and training boxes.
XUbuntu is an Ubuntu- (and hence Debian-) based
distro. Thus easily maintainable, expandable, and
upgradable, with a repository of circa 20,000
packages.
Puppy is a specialist distro, in a choice of
sizes, which cannot be so easily changed or
expanded - but it is *blisteringly* fast ;)
btw Copy the working xorg.conf file from your
Knoppix boot-up, and the output of dmesg and
lsmod, so that you have some clues if you
have a problem with the hardware during your
installation of Debian, Puppy, or watever you
settle on.
