...and by way of thanks, I'd like to offer up this little tidbit:

To send an alt+tab to an X server without a keyboard, get a package 
called 'xvkbd' and use the following command:

xvkbd -text "\A\t"

from what I gather, xvkbd is basically an on-screen keyboard thing that 
you can control via the command line. It works on my Ubuntu desktop, anyway!
