[Liverpool] Android SIM card question

Hello, community!

I have just bought a phone (Linux phone, of course) from Three and don't
have time to root it during the next couple of days before I'm going for a
holiday to Europe.
I wonder - is it necessary for a phone to be rooted prior to using a sim
card from a different carrier (in a different country)?
Is the procedure of "unlocking' a different one from rooting or is it the
same thing?
