I've spent the last few days banging my head against the wall trying to
understand VLAN's. I'm trying to use a single router and set of wires to
create two completely separate networks for a client (either have a
guest wifi and an internal wifi, or separate the lan from the wifi -
both are possible). Main advantage would be for security purposes - such
as having a guest wifi securely sharing the same set of cables as an
internal lan in an organisation, but QoS and limiting bandwidth for
certain users or applications are other reasons for doing this. If
anyone is interested in understanding the principles behind VLAN's
workings, how to configure OpenWRT on routers for them and how to
configure a Linux box/server to do VLAN trunking - now is the time to
make yourself known - and I will see if I can find a person who can
explain it all to you :-)
I might be able to cobble together a basic presentation on this by next
Wednesday if there is enough interest.
