Geoff,

the language setting and the keyboard setting are separate.
in the bottom right corner, next to the clock, you will see the German flag.
Right click this and choose Configure
Then choose United Kingdom as the primary layout and go through the additional layouts unticking the ones you don't want. I unticked them all.
