I notice that unlike LILO,  GRUB uses another system to identify disks.

So does FreeBSD.  I understand that Slackware Linux tends to be more
UNIX-like than some others.  What do they use Phil ?

As an aside,  my book on FreeBSD uses  ad0 for hda,  and ad0s1 for hda1.
There may be alternatives.
