I tried what we were talking about and yes, you can change the screen
resolution from the keyboard to give you a rudimentary zoom and it is
possible to have a white on black colour scheme under X.  I've yet to
work out how to do that permanently but it has to be possible.  I'll try
and remember to bring a laptop along to the curry so we can see if this
is any use to you.
