At Phil's shop I asked whether you knew (off-hand) what mail client 
Sarge uses.
My old Debian Woody always used KMail.

My Sarge seemingly  uses Mozilla Thunderbird.

The main change,  which may be incidental,  is that  Thunderbird 
automatically
downloads any mail sitting in the in-box of the Web-mail server.

KMail requires the "check-mail in" button to be clicked.

Sometimes, I would prefer the mail to go to one of the other machines on 
my net,
so I don't invoke Thunderbird until I have looked on the Yahoo 
mail-server  (which
is used by BT).
