Most distros will provide a nice utility for doing this, or a couple of them but I don't know of any that is common on a large number of distros.  Well strictly speaking, I don't know how to use any of them but I've seen them when installing Mandrake etc. and never been too impressed so just stick with the hair shirt method ;)
