Hi Chris

I think I'll give this guy a call and see what these tubes can do.

Ian

PS Those of you not on Freecycle missed the opportunity to get a chimney
stack this week together with a revolving cowl!

Hi Ian,

These tubes are like a thermos flask, in fact two tubes with a vacuum
between. The broken ones have no vacuum. The upside is that the inner tube
has a high tech selective coating which absorbs sunlight but radiates very
little energy (>93%, <7%). You could use an inner tube alone, with water
running through it, or slide an outer tube over to act as double glazing.
You would have to figure out a way to cut the end off to create a tube,
probably by scoring. You could make manifolds for the ends by cutting
suitable sized holes in waterproof containers and sealing with silicone.
Call me on xxxxx xxxxxx during office hours and we can arrange a time for
you to come and have a look. There is a map of my office location in Upton
upon Severn at eco-nomical.co.uk.

On the other hand, a brand new tube with heat pipe is only £15 + VAT, which
might prove more successful and would certainly be easier. You would have
to orient your trough between 15 degrees and vertical though. The heat pipe
avoids having water in the tube, and thereby reduces sealing issues.

Kind regards

Simon Watts
