Hi Ian,
hopefully you will have a backup at least of your home directory :-)
If you were sensible when you first installed Ubuntu then you will have
put /home on a separate partition. If you did then it's very easy to
re-install Ubuntu wiping the / partition but keeping your
existing /home. If you then use the same username and UID then you'll
keep all you old user settings (if you actually want to)
Keeping /home on a separate partition makes life so much easier if you
like upgrading, swaping distros or even running multiple distros.
I've yet to try Heron beta as I tend to wait for the full releases (I
prefer things to actually work :-). It's difficult enough keeping up
with new full versions every six months anyway. You could always install
Gutsy then do a distribution upgrade when Heron comes out. As long as
you don't add too much non standard software dist-upgrades in
Debian/Ubuntu tend to work ok.
Gutsy is very good indeed and I'm running it on my new uber desktop, old
desktop (dist-upgraded from dapper) and in VMware very happily. A lot
more works out of the box than before which is great. I'll wait for
Heron to come out before I upgrade my dapper laptop as I've customised
it too heavily and it'll take far too much work to do a successful
dist-upgrade (I've learnt my lesson now ;-)
I'll have to actually turn up to a meeting or go down the pub sometime.
