[Malvern] search replace

Yo

When doing a search/replace recursively ignoring whitespace what do you use?

ie

replace:

this is a sentence
over 
several <div class="test">with     


annoying spaces and
</div> new lines


with

<span class="new">this is a sentence over </span>
several <div class="test">with almost less
annoying spaces and
</div> new lines

It seems that I can search and replace strings in almost anything including tapioca but when it comes to a search/replace relying on a copy and paste from a file, nothing wants to know.

I don't mind if the programs are command line or GUI
