anything you edit in the grub loader will need to be done each time you
boot, so I'd use this to test the theory out before making permanent
changes. I've been having some trouble when booting as my screen goes
blank and I get an "input not recognised" banner floating round the
screen. Having tested the theory that removing "splash" from the boot
line makes the screen work properly I'll be fixing this permanently later :)
