I have two PC's with consoles next to each other. I use on as a small
server (firewall, nfs, samba and mail), and one as a desktop machine (X,
Gnome, some apps). Both computers happily run X. I have tried using both
screens with one keyboard and mouse (x2x) which runs OK.

What I really want is for the desktop machine to control both monitors
as if they were connected to the one machine. I thought that a
combination of running the second display as a remote x server for the
desktop machine and using x2x to control it. This has the flaw of being
a completely different workspace, when what I want is just to extend the
current one.

I have googled and can't find anyone describing setups like this. Can
this be done, and if so where do I start?

Both machines are running Debian Woody, with 2.4.18 kernels.
