Or how about a copy of a minimal system, statically built, written to
CDR and left in the drive. I'm not sure if anyone makes these disks, but
I made one following modified instructions from
www.linuxfromscratch.org. I made it bootable, and hey presto, no need
for a hard disk on my firewall.
