Sorry, people seem to have misunderstood me - the computer won't boot with the 
disk connected.  So I can't get to the dd stage... once I'm there I stand a 
chance I know.  These errors come before the system is booted.  I will try 
some of Duncan's suggestions and see if I can get it booting with it in, then 
will try some of these other things.
