Thanks for the very speedy replies.  Yes - asking about stuff an hour in advance is a bit daft really!  I've gone for modem near the cable entrance and get some ethernet - it seemed the best way particularly as the PC might be moving rooms soon anyway.

Great links - there's some pretty detailed stuff at those broadband sites - and most importantly - how to get connected without using the Windows only CD it comes with!

These iptable things seem very complicated... :-(
