I bought a cheapo (£25) "Mustek ScanExpress 1200 UB Plus 600x1200 dpi USB
Flatbed Scanner" from ebuyer (see
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?product_uid=36145 ) and it
works well with the sane stuff and libusb. I had to download the firmware
driver thing from the website
( http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/ ). I also had to
uncomment the relevant lines in /etc/sane.d/gt68xx.conf for my scanner. Now
I can use kooka (but only as root at the moment) to scan stuff in...

That's not a very thorough explanation, but it's just what I remember from
doing it a few months back, and I've not really helped you. Just thought I
might encourage you that it is possible! :)
