Hi,
>Has anyone installed 'ubuntu'? I would be grateful for any comments, and >experiences.
I installed ubuntu on a ibm t21 thinkpad. Went OK apart from having a hardware and software cursor displayed under X. This meant there was a X cursor visible but unusable. Fixed at the LUG fix session in beeston :-))
Apart from that it seems very nice, runs gnome, prints with minimal setup, usb memory sticks work ok (auto mounted at /media/sda and pop up in nautilus). There are no server tools installed and the software installed isn't designed for coding/hacking but its great for general non geek use.
Also apt is set up so you can apt-get most software you need from ubuntus archives.
With the 6 monthly software updates (with apt!) it seems like a no-brainer for desktop systems for family/friends.
The installer is curses based (ie non graphical) and you do need to read some of the screens, but it asks the same questions as RH9 so shouldn't give you any grief.
