And this is where it /is/ /useful/ to have multiple layers of security, 
mainly just to trap admin mistakes. The penalty is in the extra admin 
required and the time needed to acquire a deeper understanding of the 
system...


For casual users with no services on linux surfing the web, a firewall 
is still superfluous. (On MS, the firewall very usefully plugs some of 
the glaring OS holes and exploits!)
