A BIG bonus for the 2.6 kernel is that full NTFS read-write is now 
supported.

Meanwhile, on 2.4, I just use a FAT32 partition for common Windoze and 
linux stuff.

(However, not been on the Win side for many months... And then there is 
WINE...)


Why are you so keen on maintaining permissions when they simply don't 
exist on FAT? (Note that you can set permissions, uid and gid for the 
linux mount.)
