For best results, you should use something like:

btdownloadcurses.py --max_upload_rate 5 --request_backlog 35 
--responsefile mytorrent-XXXXX.torrent

where 'upload rate' is in kBytes/s and is at most 80% of your uplink 
maximum to avoid high latency choking the ack packets due to a saturated 
(and heavily buffered) uplink.

I've set my upload limit to ~70% so as to leave it on serving/seeding 
without interferring with other web bashing. Also look at wondershaper 
or the traffic controls in shorewall.
