[Nottingham] Which Bootloader?

Hello,

  Is there a generic way to check which bootloader a machine is using
if both LILO and GRUB are installed and configured without actually
rebooting? I tried "dd if=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1 | strings" with some
success on some systems, but that doesn't strike me as the most
reliable way of finding out. Googling unfortunately only throws up a
whole host of generic problems with either GRUB or LILO (or both), but
nothing relevant.
