Thanks to Philip and Mike for their suggestions, and I hope the rest of
you get your cucumber problems sorted soon. ;-)

The problem turned out to be a hardware one. Things got even worse,
because I reinstalled WinXP but then got the message "Missing operating
system" when I rebooted after the first stage of the install. Arggh!
Further exploration with parted showed the lba flag against the
partition, and when I changed the hard disk settings in the BIOS from
"Auto" to "LBA" all was sweetness and light. It seems that the partition
created by WinXP install did not end on a cylinder boundary. After
changing the BIOS setting, I managed to create a set of partitions which
everyone was happy with.

But it's been an interesting experience. I've learned to use fdisk and
parted, to create ext3 filesystems, to use the Fedora CD as a rescue
disk, and to regenerate GRUB using grub-install. For the last to work
properly you have to chroot to the Fedora installation, which took me a
little while to work out. Oh yes, and I now know what "chroot" means.

Quite a successful disaster really. Thanks again for your help.
