Thanks guys for the welcome and the replies. 

After I posted the question, I had another search for info on setting up Ubuntu and sure enough, after the horse has bolted (or my question was asked), I found info on how to set up Ubuntu as a server and what type of software I could use. For anybody else who may be interested but were afraid to ask (like I was ;-) )a place you can get more info is at www.aboutdebian.com. This seemed to be a good start for me to set up the server I want as it is done at my user level for Linux (which is very poor) but hopefully, playing around with the comand line will help me reach a standard that stops our Ann calling me "...the weakest link...".

Again, thanks for the replies. Am off to install Ubuntu on one of my boxes and practice my very limited Linux skills.
