thanks James, that did the trick.
the file was in fact /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 so i guess they both use XFree86 ?

i really like Ubuntu, it's the only distro i have installed, but there's things it doesn't do on a default setup that Mepis does do, ie. SMB support, K3B, auto-mounting of windows partitions.
until i get more familiar with installing stuff, i want as much as possible included by default.
Ubuntu is a top-contender as i prefer Gnome to KDE, but i still have some evaluating to do.
