The latest mplayer-386 debs from marillat have been unsuitable for upgrade for 
some time (at least from my ubuntu machines) to the latest version there, 
i.e. 1:1.0-pre7-0.0. I've stuck with 1:1.0-pre6-0.3ubuntu6 which I must have 
picked up some time ago but I must say I haven't looked too deeply into why 
it won't upgrade - the libc version dependency stands out though. 

If push comes to shove, I can send you the deb: that might get you running.
