You should use the Nvidia drivers, but you have to install one first.

This is not difficult; but can be nervewracking, as it involves that TTY 
screen you encountered.

The latest driver does stuff like xinerama and cool KDE 3.4 stuff  (I 
read somewhere.)

So just grab it off the Nvidia site:
