I don't know about javascript but I have seen images used. 
The text was a 'funny font' which combined with the surrounding image to
make it difficult for OCR scanners. eg every n'th row blank or a random
distribution of dots with a slight increase in density making visible
characters. Obviously you cannot make the image a mailto link but anyone
really interested in this would be willing to do a little typing :)
