If you can tolerate the crash-prone binary only drivers. I'd advise
/against/ nvidia cards. Particularly since they've got a bad track record
for compatibility with DVI displays.

That said, you're right: The ATI binary-only drivers are dire, with such
nuisances as not supporting Xv and DRI at the same time (one or the
other, not both).

The Radeon 7000s have opensource 3D support, and most distros come with
all the packages to get 3D acceleration (DRI) working without having to
resort to binary only drivers.

The Radeon 9200 should be the most recent ATI card that the in-kernel
DRM and in-tree Xorg/XFree86 DRI project supports, with r300-era in Xorg
CVS (the next release should contain the stable release for it). r300
era = Radeon 9600, X300, X700 and most likely 9800 and X800.
