Not to get into distro flame wars, but while you may be able to
"optimise" gentoo for your PC, it'll be spending lots of it's time
compiling and stuff, you can do other things at the same time but it'll
slow everything else down.

You may be better off trying xubuntu for a light ubuntu derivative.
