Yep, I've found the WiFi support in Ubuntu to be very good for the
devices I've tried thus far.

If you want a good general purpose stand-along WiFi box, I can recommend
the D-Link DWL-2000AP+ box. It's an ethernet access point, but can also
be configured to be a mere client or point-to-point link. Very easy.
