Does an entry for the card appear in the Places menu? If so you can
define an action for it to take in the system->preferences->removable
drives and media capplet. (From your description you probably want to
select the mount and browse options)

Ubuntu uses UUIDs instead of /dev/sdb1 etc, so I *think* that this
should work fine anyway.
